However more significant is the fact that major firms like BDO, operating with a solid blue chip client base, are now including interim management as part of their offering to the market.

Perhaps the most significant finding is that the number of IM who have found their assignment through service providers has risen from 46 to 56 %. This is in line with other research findings but may lead to the suggestion that the IM market is not as large as has been claimed in the recent past

This is a comprehensive article which starts by quoting the IMA survey showing a 55% increase in interim assignments in 2007 over 2006. It should however be noted that the membership has expanded over this period which may account for some of that. The artticle also suggests that with the impending recession the range of interim assignments is likely to widen. The article concludes with some intereasting statisitcs about the industry from the clienrts perspective taken from Chiumento's Positively Interim report published in May 2008.

Executives Online 'Business Exposure Report' revealed that 38% of the 102 companies surveyed felt that they had been left vulnerable due to the sudden or unplanned departure of senior personnel. The article contends that the use of interim managers is a way to overcome this. Interestingly this is at variance with the IMA Quarterly survey which finds that, within their membership, less than 20 % of assignments can be described as gap management.

This is a useful article by Gail BELL of Interim Alliance suggesting that the engagement of an interim manager should be seen as an investment and not just a cost. Before starting an assignment the return on investment should be identified and if it is not enough then an alternative solution should be sought.

Achieving an improved work/life balance and taking on more stimulating work are amongst the key attractions for women taking on interim management roles.
More important than financial reward is the ability to work flexibly (64 per cent), while 76 per cent said they now enjoyed a better work/life balance thanks to interim management.

Interestingly of those who responded, 575 were under 50 and 20 % under 40 showing that the average age of interims is continuing to fall.

There is no tougher assignment than the NHS for an interim manager. But for those who are up for a challenge they will find the camaraderie to pull them through.

This is particularly pertinent when the NHS is under scrutiny and the cost of consultants, which probably included IM, is under fire. Interestingly most IM are used for turn-arounds, to sort out the finances and to manage major projects.
